Pinterest SEO

Pinterest ranks pins the way a search engine ranks pages, with a recommendation feed layered over the top. Four signals decide how far a pin travels.

Four signals

Pin quality

Saves, outbound clicks, close-ups and watch time — measured across months rather than the first day. Steady performance beats a spike.

Pinner quality

The account itself: publishing regularity, board coherence, whether the profile looks like it belongs to someone who cares about the subject.

Domain quality

How many people pin directly from your site and how long visitors stay after arriving. Long-form content has an advantage product and affiliate pages rarely get.

Relevance

Keywords across more fields than most people expect: pin title, description, alt text, board name, board description, text inside the image, and the destination page.

Where new pins die

A new pin goes to a small test audience. Engagement across roughly the first 48 hours decides whether distribution widens. Because the process cascades, tiny differences at the entrance produce enormous differences at the exit.

Three impressions — filtered before the test

Usual causes: a near-duplicate of something already published, a template reused with small edits, an unclaimed or untrusted domain, a link shortener, the wrong aspect ratio, a missing description, or an account under reduced distribution.

Twenty impressions — passed the filter, failed the test

Nobody saved it and nobody clicked. Usually the visual hook fails in the half second it gets, or the keywords put it in front of people who were never going to care.

Above a hundred — entered distribution

That is only the beginning. Pins commonly peak three to six months after publication. Early flat numbers are not the final score.

Checklist

  • Claim the domain.
  • Add a save button to your pages — direct pinning raises domain quality.
  • Ship 1000×1500.
  • Avoid link shorteners.
  • Put keywords in title, description, alt text, board name and board description.
  • Put the key phrase inside the image as well.
  • Name boards after search queries and fill each to twenty pins before expecting anything.
  • Track save rate. Impressions grow for reasons unrelated to whether the work is going well.

See it on your account

Knowing the signals is one thing. Seeing which boards are suppressed and which ten queries you can actually rank for is another. That is the free audit.
